Digitising Family Records

This session will explaining how to create digital images of your family records. It will cover reasons and uses for digitising, image resolution, colour management, file types, compression, metadata, storage options and equipment. (This session can be either 45 minutes or 2 hours plus a workshop)


Mapping your Ancestors

SHOW – DON'T TELL!!
Replace lengthy descriptions of places with a simple map and improve your family stories. Using maps will give a sense of place and the setting of your family story. Maps can show the family’s position in the world, their local environment and the path of their travels.

Learn about maps using different content, sources of maps for you to use and displaying your ancestor’s lives using Google Maps that can then be shared with others.  (This session is 45 minutes and needs access to the Internet)

Using Maps in your Family Story

This session will discuss how to improve your family stories with the use of maps.

It will cover where you can obtain a suitable map (Internet, atlas or other sources); how to modify the map to tell your family story and then insert the finished map into your story. (This session is 45 minutes and would be assisted by access to the Internet)


Obscure Place Names and Parish Maps

This session will discuss how to locate that obscure place name that you have been searching for and then search for and download Parish maps to your computer to assist in further research.

It will cover the resources that are available to find your locality, the background to Parish maps, using the HLRV (Historic Land Records Viewer) within the NSW Land Registry Services website where you can view Parish Maps and how to Print or Download the selected Parish map to your computer. (This session is 45 minutes and needs access to the Internet)


Discover the HLRV (Historical Land Records Viewer)

People often ask – What is the HLRV? OR I have trouble finding my way through the HLRV!

This presentation will step you through what the HLRV (Historical Land Records Viewer) really is and how it can help you with your Family Research. This presentation will demonstrate:

  • ·       What the HLRV provides to users
  • ·       How to navigate the HLRV
  • ·       Understanding the records and processes (including flowcharts)
  • ·       Searching the records
  • ·       Benefits to family research.

(This session is 45-60 minutes)


Introduction to Land Records and Parish Maps

This session will discuss how Land purchases were recorded from the early days of settlement and will discuss how to search the indexes of Land Title transfers in the Colony of New South Wales.

It will cover using the HLRV (Historic Land Records Viewer) where you can view various indexes and how to obtain copies of the original Deed Image. (This session is 45-60 minutes and needs access to the Internet)


New South Wales Historical Land Records

This series of six (6) presentations will demonstrate what the New South Wales HLRV (Historical Land Records Viewer) can provide to researchers of family history. Each session will detail a small part of what is available on the HLRV and how you can learn more about your family’s land ownership in New South Wales.

The presentations will cover the following topics:

  1. ·        History of Land Records plus Maps and Plans
  2. ·       Old System Records
  3. ·       Torrens Title Records
  4. ·       Primary Applications
  5. ·       Conditional Purchases
  6.      Crown Plans and Deposited Plans

Over the sessions we will discuss how land purchases were recorded from the early days of settlement in the Colony of New South Wales and how these records can be used to enhance your family research.

 The NSW Land Registry Services (including HLRV), Geographical Names Board and SIX Maps websites will be introduced and explained.

The Spatial Services Portal

Add  DimensioN  to your Family Research and Storytelling with map imagery.

SIX is the Spatial Information eXchange and it has some free functions available to genealogists through the Spatial Services Portal:

SIX Maps allows us to transition from aerial photography of today to aerial photography of Sydney from 1943 to current street maps. It also provides Cadastral, Place Names and Addressing data.

NSW Globe is a free and easy way to view NSW government primary spatial information and spatial services using Google's familiar search and mapping functionality.

The Map Store allows you to browse and select Layered and Georeferenced PDF Topographic Maps Online.
